19th Douro Wine Region Half Marathon
Sunday, May 24, 2026, starting at 09:00 · Peso da Régua
TL;DR. The 19th Douro Wine Region Half Marathon takes place on May 24, 2026 at 09:00, with start and finish in Peso da Régua. UNESCO World Heritage terraced vineyards along the Douro river. The race draws athletes from more than 70 countries. 3-hour cut-off. Aid stations at km 5, 10, 15 and finish. May in the Régua valley can heat up quickly: sodium 500 to 700 mg/h. Fueling 60 to 90 g/h.
Fueling strategy for the Douro Half
For 1h30 to 2h30 of racing in the Douro in May, the target is 60 to 90 g/h of carbs with 1 to 2 gels during the race, and 500 to 700 mg/h of sodium (Régua tends to warm up by the end). Caffeine 3 mg/kg about 45 to 60 min before the gun (a double espresso, or a caffeinated gel around km 10 to 12). Dual-source gels (glucose plus fructose blends like Maurten 100, SiS Beta Fuel, 226ERS) let you absorb more without GI distress.
Carb loading over the 2 days before (May 22 and 23) is lighter than for a full marathon: 6 to 8 g/kg/day. Pre-race meal at 06:00 (3 hours before the 09:00 start) with oats, banana, honey and coffee. Take a pre-start gel at T-15 min with 200 ml of water. For finish times over 2h30, plan an extra gel. Valley heat starts biting from km 12 onwards, so push hydration at the aid stations.
Course: 21 km through the heart of the Douro wine country
Fully paved course, certified by the Portuguese Athletics Federation. It crosses three Douro municipalities (Peso da Régua, Lamego, Armamar) inside the UNESCO World Heritage wine region. Unique scenery: terraced vineyards climbing from the riverbanks, traditional schist quintas, and the Douro itself shadowing most of the route. Known internationally as "the most beautiful race in the world". More than 70 nationalities represented in 2026.
May in the Douro: warm valley, cool mornings
May in Peso da Régua averages highs of 22 to 24C and lows of 11 to 13C. At the 09:00 start, expect typically 14 to 17C, ideal for the first 10 km. From km 12, as the valley heats up, temperatures can climb to 23 to 25C, especially if there is no breeze. Moderate chance of rain (May is a transitional month). No high-altitude wind.
For runners over 2h, the second half can get thermally demanding. A caffeinated gel is worth it only if you have tested it in training; in the heat, push sodium up to 700 mg/h. Kit: light-coloured technical tee, thin cap if the sun is strong. After km 15, consider pouring aid-station water into your cap.
Logistics: Linha do Douro train, race office, bag drop
Best access to the Peso da Régua start is via the Linha do Douro train (scenic ride with stops in Pinhão and Tua) or the A24 motorway (Vila Real, Lamego). The race office opens May 22 and 23 at the Centro Termal, with late entries possible. Bag drop (called "guarda-roupa") is available, tagged by bib number. Showers are open at the Centro Termal changing rooms. No race-day bib pickup.
Aid stations: km 5, 10, 15 and finish
The organisers confirm 4 aid stations: km 5 water, km 10 water + sports drink, km 15 water + sports drink, finish water + sports drink + fruit. With 5 km between aid stations, plan your fueling carefully. 1 gel before km 5 (around km 3 to 4) and 1 gel before km 15 (around km 12 to 14) covers sub-2h finishers nicely. For times over 2h, carry one extra gel for mid-race.
Sub-elite, pacing and heritage
The race offers a sub-elite wave for men under 1h15 or women under 1h20 over the past 3 years. Submit proof of time by May 1 to info@globalsport.pt. Official pacers cover sub-1h30, sub-1h45 and sub-2h (subject to organiser confirmation). Veteran age categories run from M/F40 to M/F60, formed only with 3 or more athletes. This is the only European half marathon held inside a UNESCO wine-growing heritage site, with strong amateur Portuguese tradition since 2008.

Frequently asked questions about Douro Half Marathon
Is there a special train to reach Peso da Régua?
The Linha do Douro line runs regular CP services from Porto-São Bento. For the 2026 edition, check direct timetables on race day at cp.pt. We recommend arriving the day before (Peso da Régua has limited accommodation, so book early).
Are there official sub-1h30 or sub-1h45 pacers?
Yes, the organisers run pacers for popular target times (exact pace groups for 2026 to be confirmed at meiamaratonadodouro.pt). Check at bib collection which times are covered and which start pen they line up in.
How do I request a sub-elite bib?
Send proof of time by May 1, 2026 to info@globalsport.pt. You need a sub-1h15 (men) or sub-1h20 (women) finish from the past 3 years. It gives you a sub-elite start pen ahead of the main field.
Are there veteran prizes?
Yes, age categories M/F40, M/F45, M/F50, M/F55 and M/F60. Categories are only formed if 3 or more athletes are entered. Confirm at bib collection which categories in your age bracket have been formed.
Does carb loading make sense for 21 km?
Yes, a light load of 6 to 8 g/kg/day for 24 to 36 hours beforehand helps in May when the heat picks up. For races under 2h, carb loading is less critical than for a marathon, but the 06:00 pre-race meal should still be substantial (1 to 1.5 g/kg).
