TL;DR. The Sesimbra Spartan Weekend 2026 takes place on November 7 and 8 at Praia da Califórnia. Three distances for a Trifecta on the same weekend: Sprint 5K (20 obstacles), Super 10K (25) and Beast 21K (30). Mixed terrain across the Arrábida hills, beach and castle. Penalty: 30 burpees per failed obstacle. The global "AROO!" vibe. European Wolf Season finale.

OCR fueling strategy by distance

In OCR, fueling scales with duration. Sprint 5K (around 1h30): 1 mid-race gel plus water, no complexity. Super 10K (2 to 3h): 30 to 60 g/h of carbs with a gel every 30 min or chews (Clif Bloks, 226ERS). Beast 21K (4 to 6h): 60 g/h with gels and energy bars, plus extra sodium 500 to 700 mg/h. Caffeine 100 to 200 mg pre-race helps grip strength (rope, multi-rig) and focus.

Pre-race meal 2 to 3 hours out: oats, banana and egg (easy to digest). Post-race: hit the 30-minute window with fast carbs plus protein (whey or a recovery shake), especially between the Saturday Sprint and the Sunday Super in a Trifecta. For the Beast, carry 2 to 3 chews in your shorts pockets (gels can burst on obstacles). Hydration: 500 ml per hour during the race, then push post-race with a sodium drink to replace 1.5 to 2x your weight lost.

Course: beach, Arrábida and castle

A mixed terrain unique to Portugal: beach sand, limestone on the Serra da Arrábida, and a technical section through Sesimbra Castle. Panoramic Atlantic view (Cabo Espichel in the distance). Signature obstacles: Atlas Carry (45 kg men, 35 kg women), A-Frame Cargo, Barbed Wire Crawl, Fire Jump, Inverted Wall, Bucket Carry, Hercules Hoist, Multi-Rig, Rope Climb (4.8 m), Sandbag Carry (27 kg men, 18 kg women), Slip Wall, Spear Throw, Walls up to 2.4 m. Sesimbra Spartan is the season finale (Wolf Season) of the European calendar.

November weather in Sesimbra: pack for wet

November averages highs around 18C and lows around 12C. Sea temperature 17 to 18C (you will feel cold on water obstacles). Moderate to high chance of rain (the wettest autumn month). Wet kit for part of the day is a near certainty. The Saturday morning Sprint can bring mild hypothermia if the wind picks up. Recommended: a long-sleeve technical tee under the Spartan top, thin gloves for wet grip, compression technical socks. Get into dry kit immediately after finishing.

Trifecta Weekend and the burpee penalty

The Portugal Trifecta Pass (around 349 euros) gets you all three distances on the same weekend: Sprint Saturday + Super Sunday + Beast (specific date). Finish all three and you take home the Trifecta medal, the global OCR symbol. Penalty per failed obstacle: 30 burpees (except on the Sprint, where some obstacles have alternative penalties). Burpees add real time: in the 25-obstacle Super, failing 3 means 90 extra burpees, around 5 minutes lost.

Strategy: protect the Spear Throw (one attempt only) and the Rope Climb (technique-driven). Train pull-ups specifically (for the Multi-Rig), Atlas Carry with a kettlebell at home, and quality burpees. Beta-alanine in a 4 to 6 week loading phase (3 to 5 g/day) plus creatine (5 g/day) help repeated glycolytic efforts. On the day, avoid loose clothing (it catches on barbed wire) and use proper OCR shoes (Salomon Speedcross, Inov-8 Mudclaw).

Logistics: A2 from Lisbon, packet pickup at the Spartan Village

Access: A2 motorway + IC32 down to Sesimbra, around 1 hour from Lisbon. Parking around the venue (check the official transfer). Packet pickup at the Spartan Village inside the venue across race days. Bag drop available for a fee (around 5 to 10 euros), controlled area. Festival and family zone at Praia da Califórnia, with food, music and official Spartan merch. Wolf Season finale: celebratory atmosphere with athletes from across Europe.

Aid stations and nutrition

Typically 1 station every 3 to 4 km with water + sports drink (Spartan Hydro). No gels are served on course. Bananas and energy bars are available at the Spartan Village post-race. For the Beast 21K, carry 3 to 4 of your own gels (or chews) and 1 to 2 sodium capsules. For the Sprint 5K, you do not need anything beyond base hydration. The post-race Spartan Village has food trucks and a recovery zone.

Frequently asked questions about Spartan Sesimbra

Can I do the Beast and Super on the same weekend?

Yes. That is the Trifecta Weekend: finish Sprint + Super + Beast on the same weekend and you earn the Trifecta medal. It requires active recovery between races, with proper refuelling (60 g of carbs + 25 g of protein in the 30-minute window post-race) and at least 8 hours of sleep between stages.

What happens if I fail an obstacle?

30 burpee penalty (except on the Sprint, where some obstacles have alternatives like a modified Multi-Rig). Burpees add time: on the Super, failing 3 obstacles means 90 burpees, around 5 extra minutes. Train quality burpees specifically (chest and hips touch the ground).

Are there buses from Lisbon?

The organisers usually partner with hotels and operators. Check pt.spartan.com/en/races/sesimbra around 2 months out. Otherwise, carpool through the Spartan Portugal community, or take the Sintra-Cascais CP line to Cascais and Uber from there.

Can I race without OCR-specific shoes?

You want trail running shoes with aggressive grip: Salomon Speedcross, Inov-8 Mudclaw, ON Cloudventure. Road shoes are not advised, as they offer poor traction on wet rock and mud. Shoes need to be snugly tied (tight laces + double knot) so you do not lose them in water or mud.

Is there chip timing?

Yes, MyLaps or similar. Results are published online within hours. The Trifecta medal is only validated if you complete Sprint + Super + Beast within the same Spartan Weekend, with the chip confirming each finish.
